The class before the class

First Class

Every VR Nihongo class is a mission: a place, a job, and a few lines you have to say out loud. These four are the ones you run alone, before any of them. Say them aloud if you want; this page never listens.

Four of her rooms

Four missions. Four lines each.

Each mission is one scene from the phrase decks on the home page, put back into the order it happens in, standing in a room from one of Moe’s own classes. Read it, hear it, say it — in any order you like.

Mission

In the classroom

A classroom that is nobody's school, a circle of avatars, and not one face in the room.

  2. Say where you're from
  3. Say why you're here
  4. Hand the turn back
  1. Arrive

Someone turns towards you. You go first — this is the whole greeting.

    Hajimemashite.

    Nice to meet you.

    Play this line

  2. Say where you're from

Swap アメリカ for your own country. The rest of the sentence never changes.

    Amerika kara kimashita.

    I'm from the U.S.

    Play this line

  3. Say why you're here

Everyone in the room is doing the same thing. This sentence is why.

    Nihongo o benkyō shite imasu.

    I'm studying Japanese.

    Play this line

  4. Hand the turn back

This closes your turn. Whoever is next can take it from here.

    Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.

I look forward to learning with you.

Difficulty

Six recorded voices, so the line does not always arrive in the voice you got used to. The button changes which voice says it — the words do not change.

If you freeze

Two lines that fit any of the scenes on this page. Neither one is an apology.

  • Mō ichido onegai shimasu.

Drink, then how many, then ください。 That order works for almost anything.

    Hotto kōhī o hitotsu kudasai.

    One hot coffee, please.

  2. Change it

You already ordered. Changing your mind is a question, not an apology.

    Aisu ni dekimasu ka.

    Can you make it iced?

  3. Take it with you

The one thing every café will ask you. Answering first saves the exchange.

    Mochikaeri de onegai shimasu.

    To go, please.

    Play this line

  4. Leave

Said on the way out, for food and drink you have already had.

Say it before they scan, so you are not interrupting the till.

そう。『春』という言葉を使いましたね。

Let’s Go to the Safari! Human-reviewed source

Practice note — written by VR Nihongo

Right — you used the word ‘spring.’

A learner has just tried a recently learned word. The reply names the successful move instead of replacing the learner’s sentence.

What does that small 「使いましたね」 do for the room?

Reveal the classroom move

The verb reports what the learner did; ね invites mutual recognition. The correction space stays open without erasing the attempt.

赤ちゃん鹿は何匹?

Let’s Go to the Safari! Human-reviewed source

Practice note — written by VR Nihongo

How many baby deer are there?

The class is counting animals in the safari scene. The question narrows the task to the baby deer and supplies the counter.

Which reply fits the opening in this question?

Reveal the classroom move

何匹 makes the missing slot a number with 匹. 「二匹います」 completes the same counting frame without rebuilding the question.

今日の質問はちょっと難しいですね。面白いでしょ?

Let’s Get to Know Each Other! Dice Talk Human-reviewed source

Practice note — written by VR Nihongo

Today’s question is a little difficult. Interesting, isn’t it?

One participant calls the prompt difficult. The next turn answers with a light check-back instead of explaining the game again.

What is 「面白いでしょ?」 inviting?

Reveal the classroom move

でしょ turns an evaluation toward the other person. It asks for alignment, converting difficulty into something the group can be curious about together.

つけ麺。おお、おしゃれ。いいね。おしゃれだね。

Let’s Get to Know Each Other! Dice Talk Human-reviewed source

Practice note — written by VR Nihongo

Tsukemen. Oh, stylish. Nice — that’s stylish.

One participant names tsukemen as a favourite. The reply stacks short reactions, keeping the topic open for the next question.

What should the learner hear in this string of short reactions?

Reveal the classroom move

The short backchannels do not carry new information. They give the learner room and momentum; the follow-up question proves the topic is worth extending.

見つけられなかったものは何ですか?

Let’s Go Shopping! Human-reviewed source

Practice note — written by VR Nihongo

What couldn’t you find?

The shopping game has moved from the money left over to an item that could not be found. The question supplies nearly the whole answer frame.

Which answer enters the frame this question has just opened?

Reveal the classroom move

見つけられなかった asks for a failed search in the past. Naming an item with を and finishing with 見つけられませんでした answers the exact slot.

おお。じゃあ、買ったものは何ですか?

Let’s Go Shopping! Human-reviewed source

Practice note — written by VR Nihongo

Oh. Then, what did you buy?

The learner has finished describing what they could not find. じゃあ pivots from the missing item to the successful part of the trip.

What kind of next turn does this pivot make easy?

Reveal the classroom move

じゃあ closes one branch and opens the next. The learner can leave the failed search behind and answer with one concrete purchase.

はい。じゃあ、どこに住んでいますか?

Let’s Interview in Japanese! Human-reviewed source

Practice note — written by VR Nihongo

Okay. Then, where do you live?

The class moves from interview setup into a question someone can answer immediately. The grammar is already inside the prompt.

Which answer keeps the same frame and only supplies the missing place?

Reveal the classroom move

どこ marks the open place; に住んでいます is the frame. Replace どこ with a location and the reply is already built.

あ、どんな映画が好きですか?

Let’s Interview in Japanese! Human-reviewed source

Practice note — written by VR Nihongo

Ah — what kind of films do you like?

The interview has reached preferences. どんな asks for a kind or quality rather than the name of one title.

Which answer meets the width of this question?

Reveal the classroom move

どんな映画 asks for a category or character of film. A genre answer stays reusable; a single title is narrower than the slot the question opens.

Each Japanese excerpt comes from a published VR Nihongo class and may include Moe or a learner. Every explanation and choice was written for this site. The timestamp opens the original lesson.

That was four lines.

Four lines is a reasonable amount to bring on a first night. The live classes do the same thing with other people in the room; in the VRChat class you are an avatar, not a face.
